Campaigning pensioners slam UK Government over inadequate handling of cost-of-living crisis

The Scottish Pensioners’ Forum, the campaigning organisation for older people in Scotland, has today slammed the UK Government over an inadequate Spring Statement which is ‘totally out of touch with reality.’

Rose Jackson, SPF Chair fumed:

‘Most working-class people certainly won’t have a spring in their step after this dismal attempt at support from a vastly out of touch UK Government. As the cost of living continues to surge to record highs, this Spring Statement offers nothing but empty promises yet again.

‘How can ordinary people honestly afford to put food on their tables and heat their homes with increases spiralling out of control? The Chancellor’s half-baked attempt to do the right thing just won’t cut it.’

Looming fuel poverty crisis

The Scottish Pensioners’ Forum, the campaigning organisation for older people in Scotland, today hit out at the UK Government over their handling of the looming fuel poverty crisis facing the UK by calling it “hopelessly inadequate.”

Rose Jackson, SPF Chair argued

“The Chancellor’s response to today’s announcement from Ofgem smacks of indifference to the plight of older people. What he is offering in one hand in comparison to what he has taken away with the other with the suspension of the triple lock just isn’t good enough. This must be reinstated.”

SPF welcomes WASPI report

The Scottish Pensioners’ Forum: the campaigning organisation for older people in Scotland, have today welcomed the findings of the National Audit Office report which uncovers the administrative blunders which led to many women losing out on their state pension entitlement.

Rose Jackson, SPF Chair, stated

“While we welcome the findings of the report, it only serves to highlight the dire situation that many women have found themselves in on reaching state pension age. This is nothing short of blatant indifference to their needs on the part of the UK Government.“

“Without being given a full explanation of the complexities of the situation throughout their working lives, both as homemakers and in paid employment, access to their state pension should have been an entitlement for women in their own right and not just another bureaucratic hoop for them to have to jump through upon reaching retirement.“

Campaigning pensioners say first manifesto breaches are simply the start of many

The Scottish Pensioners’ Forum, the campaigning organisation for older people in Scotland, have today hit out at Westminster for their blatant manifesto breach on the triple lock pension.

Rose Jackson, SPF Chair argued

“The triple lock is a safeguard for many pensioners allowing them to keep their heads above water as inflation costs continued to rise. This blatant manifesto breach is only the start. As we’ve seen over the past 24 hours you break one promise, more are sure to follow.”

The UK already has one of the lowest state pensions in the western world and as well as this has old and new pensions systems, which range from as little as £90 per week to £179.60 per week, meaning many older people, mainly women and low paid workers, who are reliant on state pensions as their only means of income are worse off than their retired counterparts.
