Campaigning Pensioners set out Demands for a Fairer Future
The Scottish Pensioners Forum, the campaigning organisation for older people in Scotland, have today launched their General Election manifesto calling for an end to intergenerational inequality and highlighting their hopes for a more socially just future for all.
Rose Jackson, SPF Chair stated:
“From the beginning of their campaigns, we have heard politicians arguing over who will win the so called “grey vote” and this just speaks volumes. The terminology itself is defamatory and ageist so how can we realistically believe any of them have our best interests at heart?
“We have set out our key demands in our manifesto and none of them are unrealistic: a better standard of living for all; improved health and social care; better public transport; better housing; healthier and accessible communities; an end to increased profits for energy suppliers - what’s so wrong in that?
Over the past year, the SPF have joined forces with Unite the Union and the National Pensioners Convention to campaign against any further rising to the state pension age and the online petition has amassed over 44,000 signatures to date.
“Last year campaigners, most of pensionable age, travelled across the country to hand in our petition, in both London and Edinburgh, and they wouldn’t even open the doors to us to accept it, that really showed their true colours.
“We have been let down before with breaches in manifesto pledges, do they really think we are that stupid to fall for more of their hollow words?
“All of the parties will have to work hard to gain our trust and we will be watching their campaigns closely in order to make an informed choice at the ballot box”
